School Competition: Winners in Brussels

The 28 winning teams of the 50 Years Together in Diversity School Competition were in Brussels from 21 to 23 March 2008. The Museum of Europe offered a programme that included visits at "It’s Our History" exhibition and Mini-Europe, and also a tour of Brussels.

The student teams and their coordinating teachers were accommodated at youth hostels. They also had the opportunity to visit Brussels and its attractions by themselves. The Museum of Europe sponsored the trip to Brussels and its staff assisted the groups before and during the trip.

On Saturday 22 March 2008, the winners gathered at Tour & Taxi, the place where "It’s Our History" exhibition was organized by the Museum of Europe. On behalf of the Belgian authorities, Mr. Freddy Thielemans, the mayor of Brussels, welcomed all guests.

The Museum of Europe offered three prizes for the best three visual compositions, as follows:

  • First Prize: Italy, Liceo Artistico Statale De Chirico, Roma (Watch video)
  • Second Prize: Lithuania, Didždvario gimnazija, Šiauliai (Watch video)
  • Third Prize: Estonia, Tallinna Tõnismäe Reaalkool and Jakob Westholmi Gümnaasium, Tallinn (Watch video)

On behalf of the European Schoolnet Office, Petru Dumitru, the competition coordinator, presented an overview of the competition and also introduced the Spring Day for Europe 2008 campaign to the participants (PPT presentation).

The winning teams shared traditional food and drinks they brought from their countries. They felt part of a European family that celebrated what is different and embraced what is similar in their cultures. Karl Piaty, an Austrian teacher who accompanied his winning team, told us: “We thank the Museum of Europe and European Schoolnet for having us in Brussels this week-end. The trip was an opportunity to visit the capital of the European Union. We have spent unforgettable moments here and our students were delighted to meet peers from other Member States. I have just found out that this is the first trip abroad for many of the students that attend the event”.
